I’ve had an iPad for about a week and have enjoyed using it to teach with. Teaching photography is a joy, but sometimes it’s hard to get my students to understand what I’m wanting them to improve on when I write comments on their grade sheets.

Well enter an iPad app called TakeNotes (the webpage says PadNotes, the App Store lists it as TakeNotes). I downloaded this app and have found it’s great for showing my students exactly what I’m talking about in their critiques. I have a student email me a small jpeg of their image and then I use that image as a custom background in TakeNotes. I can then select from a variety of pens, markers, or even type to “mark up” the photo. Then I can send the photo back to them as a pdf for their critique.

Additionally, I can attach the VGA adapter to a projector or in my case a 50 inch LCD television and show the entire class the photo and my thoughts. It stimulates their thinking and allows them to see exactly what I’m talking about in the photo.

I’ve been teaching my advanced students about the business of photography this semester and talking about the importance of developing a good web presence for your business. For the last couple of years, I’ve been bouncing around with my website and haven’t been overly happy with the results. Well, last week I decided it was time to make some changes and demonstrate to my students how their old professor could learn some new tricks.

I’ve changed my blog site over the past weekend, going with a combination of Graph Paper Press and Photoshelter. I’m excited about the look and feel. It will allow me to integrate my blog, post photos and link to my archive on PhotoShelter. I had spoken with Allen Murabayashi at Photoshelter last week and as we were discussing my project he encouraged me to write about the transition.

I’ve got to say it was a pretty easy move. I started and account at GPP and downloaded a couple of themes to use in the site. Interestingly, the setup was fairly easy. I choose the On-Assignment child template for the look and began customizing.

My only problem was the PhotoShelter plugin from GPP. It was not finding my Photoshelter account. But here’s the good news. I posted my problem on the GPP help forum and less than 10 minutes later I had a reply and solution from Thad Allender the owner of GPP. What service!

I’ve gotten some great comments on the site and am looking forward to making some tweaks over the next couple of weeks.

The final match, was really over after the RL took five games from Philly and they coasted to take the final two games and the W2009 World Cup Championship.
